THE PROJECT

The 10,000 Island Dolphin Project is a long term study of the abundance, distribution and association patterns of coastal bottlenose dolphins in Southwest Florida.

Each day the Dolphin Explorer departs the dock on Marco Island, in Southwest Florida with passengers who join our survey team as we document the population of resident dolphins.

For three hours, we travel a route in one of two survey areas. Each time we encounter dolphins, we photograph their dorsal fins, and record their location, behavior and other related data.

In this site you can become familiar with this population of dolphins and participate in the discovery process.

PROGRAM

We are developing a system that will allow the public to join our them as Citizen Scientist who can use our Dorsal Fin Identification program to help us identify dolphin photos by their dorsal fin.

We take hundreds of dolphin dorsal fin photos every month that need to be compared to our Dolphin Catalog for identification. The public's assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Watch this space if you are interested in this project.
